Steeped in local history and lore, the Porter Ranch Subdivision's origins date back nearly a century to a different time in Jackson Hole.
The Jackson Hole Hereford Ranch was started in 1928 by Robert "Bruce" Porter who was a pharmacist by trade, owning and operating the Jackson Drug on the Town Square (Est. 1919). Bruce, along with the help of his father-in-law Steve "Seaver" Callahan, bought the first bunch of Herefords and-in the 1930s-purchased what is now known as the Jackson Hole Hereford Ranch off South Park Loop Road. With the heart of a rancher, Bruce Porter took great pride in being a steward of the land... a tradition that has been passed down now for the last five generations.
After 33 years of running the ranch, Bruce decided to hand the reins over to his son-in-law, Ralph Gill, a local accountant who proudly took over management of the ranch in 1961. In addition to the titles of "CPA" and "Rancher," Ralph was elected Mayor of the Town of Jackson in 1976. Although his civic duties gave him a great sense of pride in his community, his enjoyment of the summer hay season and the solitude of tending to the fields gave him the heart of a rancher.
Ralph's son, Robert Gill, started his young ranching career in the summer of 1969 at the age of 11. After working alongside his father in the Porter Ranch fields for 25 years, Robert was bestowed with the responsibility of continuing the family's tradition of ranching in the 1990s. Robert still carries on the family legacy and holds his mother Jeannine Porter-Gill's words close to his heart.
While Jackson Hole is known for its world-class skiing, breathtaking National Parks, and its prized fly fishing, the unseen beauty is its rich history of working ranches-including Jackson Hole Hereford Ranch-that brought a sense of community to this valley.
The legacy of the Jackson Hole Hereford Ranch and the Porter/Gill family lies within the brand, the which stands to this day for honest and authentic traditional ranching.
The valley's newest community, The Porter Ranch, also strives to carry on the Porter/Gill family's legacy for the next generation of Jackson Hole's residents.
